A day trip to Saona Island : Is it worth visiting?

When I was first planning my Punta Cana trip, Saona Island kept coming up everywhere. I kept seeing photos of bright turquoise water, palm trees, white sand beaches, and the famous Saona Island natural pool.

But honestly, I wasn’t sure if it would actually be worth it.

Since I was staying at an all-inclusive resort right by the beach, part of me wondered if it made sense to spend an entire day away from the resort. The Saona Island tour from Punta Cana also starts early, and with the drive to Bayahíbe, the boat ride, and the full-day schedule, it felt like a lot for a beach excursion.

But after doing the Saona Island Dominican Republic excursion myself, I can honestly say it ended up being one of my favorite experiences from Punta Cana.

The tour company picks you up from your hotel in Punta Cana, drives you to Bayahíbe, transfers you to the speedboat or catamaran, and takes you to Saona Island. If you are staying in Bayahíbe or La Romana, visiting Saona Island is a little easier because you are already much closer to the main boat departure area.

I personally booked my Saona Island tour online in advance, and I found this to be the easiest and most stress-free option. Since I was staying in Punta Cana, I wanted a tour that already included hotel pickup, transportation to Bayahíbe, the boat ride, lunch, and the return transfer. This way, I didn’t have to arrange anything separately on the day of the tour.

If you are booking online in advance, make sure you carefully check what is included in the price. Not every Saona Island Dominican Republic excursion offers the same experience. Some tours include round-trip transportation from Punta Cana, lunch, drinks, a stop at the famous Saona Island natural pool, and both speedboat and catamaran rides. For most first-time visitors, especially if you are visiting Saona Island from Punta Cana, I think booking an organized tour online in advance is the easiest option. You’ll know what’s included, what time you’ll be picked up, and what to expect before the day starts.

What to Expect on a Day Trip to Saona Island from Punta Cana?

A day trip to Saona Island from Punta Cana is a full-day experience, so be prepared for an early start and a long but beautiful day. My tour started with hotel pickup around 6:15 AM, which was before breakfast opened at our resort. Since our resort breakfast started at 7:00 AM, we grabbed coffee and snacks from the resort coffee shop before leaving, and I would definitely recommend doing the same if your pickup is early.

The tour guide contacted us the night before to confirm the pickup time and location, which made the morning much easier. They arrived on time, and once we got picked up, we started making stops at other hotels to collect more guests.

I’ll be honest — this part of the day felt like a bit of a time waste. It took around another 1.5 hours before we actually started making our way toward Bayahíbe. But this is pretty common with a shared Saona Island tour from Punta Cana. If you book a shared tour, you just have to expect multiple pickup stops and a slower start to the morning.

Drive to Bayahíbe

On the way to Bayahíbe, we met our guide, who spoke both English and Spanish. He explained the itinerary for the day and gave us an idea of what to expect once we reached the boat departure point.

We also made a short stop at a gift shop, which was helpful for using the restroom. They also offered free samples of local coffee and a traditional Dominican drink called Mamajuana. It was a quick stop, but it gave us a small taste of local culture before continuing the trip.

Transfer to the Speedboat

Once we reached Bayahíbe, we transferred to a speedboat to begin the ride toward Saona Island. As the name suggests, the speedboat goes pretty fast, and it took about an hour to reach the island area.

Most Saona Island tours from Punta Cana include a mix of speedboat and catamaran rides. Usually, one way is by speedboat and the other way is by catamaran, but this can depend on the tour operator. That said, the scenery along the way was absolutely beautiful. As we got closer to Saona Island, the color of the water changed from deep blue to bright turquoise. Absolutely Mind Blowing!

Stop at the Saona Island Natural Pool

On the way to Saona Island, we stopped at the famous Saona Island natural pool for about 45 minutes. The natural pool is a shallow sandbar in the middle of the ocean where the water is crystal clear and unbelievably blue. You can usually get off the boat, walk around in the waist-deep water, take photos, and just enjoy the scenery.

Our boat also provided unlimited drinks during the stop, and the rum and cola was definitely the best one we tried among the rest. Standing in that clear Caribbean water with a drink in hand was such a fun and relaxing part of the experience.

Spending Time on Saona Island

After the natural pool, we continued to Saona Island. As soon as we stepped onto the island, the vibe felt like pure Caribbean magic — palm trees, turquoise water, soft sand, music, and that relaxed island atmosphere.

Our guide took us to the area where everything was arranged for our group, including lunch, beach chairs, drinks, and music. There was also Caribbean dancing, which made the whole experience feel lively and fun.

Most tours include a buffet-style lunch on the island, usually with simple local food. The exact lunch setup can vary depending on the tour, so don’t expect a luxury dining experience, but it’s nice to have food included during a long day trip.

We had around two hours to enjoy Saona Island. During that time, we walked along the beach, took photos, relaxed, and went for a dip in the water.

I will say, because Saona Island is one of the most popular day trips from Punta Cana, you should expect other tour groups to be there too. It is not a completely empty island experience, but it is still incredibly scenic and enjoyable.

Returning Back to Punta Cana

For the return trip, we boarded a catamaran back toward the mainland. After a full day of adventure, the catamaran ride felt like the perfect relaxed way to end the tour.

There was music, dancing, and unlimited drinks on board. I mostly sat back with a drink in hand, watched people dancing, and enjoyed the scenery as we slowly made our way back. Compared to the speedboat, the catamaran was much slower and more relaxed.

Once we reached Bayahíbe, we transferred back to the bus for the drive to Punta Cana. It took around two hours to get back to our resort, and we reached our hotel around 7:30 PM.

Things to know before visiting Saona Island

How much does the Saona Island tour cost?

The cost of a Saona Island tour can vary depending on how you book it, what is included, and whether you choose a shared or private tour.

For our Saona Island tour from Punta Cana, we paid $80 per person. This included hotel pickup from our resort, round-trip transportation to Bayahíbe, the boat and catamaran transfer, lunch on the island, and unlimited drinks during the tour.

For what was included, I personally felt like the price was reasonable, especially because we did not have to arrange anything separately. Since it was a full-day trip from Punta Cana, having transportation, food, drinks, and the boat ride included made the experience much easier.

Private Saona Island tours are usually more expensive than shared tours, but they may be worth considering if you are traveling with a group or want a more personalized experience. A Saona Island tour from Bayahíbe may also cost less than a tour from Punta Cana because you are already closer to the boat departure point and may not need hotel transportation included.

That said, not everything on the island is included. The regular lunch was part of our tour package, but there were also special menu items available for an extra cost. So if you want something beyond the included buffet-style meal, you may need to pay separately.

There were also fun drink options on the island, like piña coladas served in a fancy pineapple, but those cost extra as well. We did not pay for anything additional, but it’s good to know in advance so you can bring some cash if you want to buy extras.

Before booking any Saona Island Dominican Republic excursion, I recommend checking exactly what is included in the price. Look for details like hotel pickup, transportation, lunch, drinks, the Saona Island natural pool stop, and whether the tour includes both speedboat and catamaran rides. A cheaper tour may not always be the best option if you have to pay extra for things later.

What to Bring for a Saona Island Tour

You need to carry all the beach essential with you to enjoy. Here are some of the things I would recommend to carry –

• Swimwear
• Sunscreen (absolutly important both for body and face)
• Sunglasses
• Waterproof Phone cover
• Phone Tripod
• Go Pro (Waterproof Camera) + Handle
• Change of clothes
• Bag for wet clothes
• A book (if you love reading)

I would also recommend bringing a little cash for extras. Even if your Saona Island Dominican Republic excursion includes lunch and unlimited drinks, you may still want to buy something extra on the island, like a fresh piña colada, special menu item, souvenir, or tip for the crew.

Overall, pack light but smart. You don’t need to bring too much, but you do want to be prepared for sun, water, photos, and a long day away from your Punta Cana resort.

Can you stay on Saona Island?

Yes, you can stay on Saona Island, but it is not like staying at a resort in Punta Cana. Saona Island is mostly visited as a day trip, and that is what most people do.

If you want to stay overnight, the main place to look is Mano Juan, a small fishing village on Saona Island. This is where you may find simple guesthouses, eco-lodges, or small local stays. The experience is much more basic and quiet compared to staying in Punta Cana or Bayahíbe.

Is Saona Island Worth Visiting? My experience

Absolutely yes — I personally think Saona Island is worth visiting.

I know the exact question you probably have in mind: if you are already staying at a beautiful beach resort in Punta Cana, why would you leave the resort, spend a full day traveling, and pay extra just to visit another beach island?

Honestly, I had the same thought when I was planning my Punta Cana trip.

Since our resort already had a beach, pool, food, and drinks, I wasn’t sure if a Saona Island tour from Punta Cana would really feel that different. But after seeing a few photos of the turquoise water, palm trees, and the famous Saona Island natural pool, I decided to book the tour and I am so glad I did.

The beach, the color of the water, and the overall island vibe were absolutely unbeatable. Saona Island has that dreamy Caribbean look that feels hard to describe until you see it in person. The water was unbelievably clear, the shades of blue were beautiful, and the whole experience felt more special than just spending another day at the resort.

For me, the Saona Island natural pool was one of the biggest highlights. Standing in shallow, crystal-clear water in the middle of the ocean with a drink in hand felt like such a memorable vacation moment. It was one of those experiences that made the early pickup and long travel day feel worth it.

That said, I would recommend visiting Saona Island only when the weather is good. This is one of those excursions where the sunshine really changes the experience. When the sun is out, the water looks even more blue and beautiful, especially at the Saona Island natural pool.

If you’re spending a few days in Punta Cana, I would definitely try to make time for Saona Island. I had originally planned to do this tour on the third day of my trip, but we ended up moving it to the second day because the weather looked better earlier in the week.

So if your schedule is flexible, I’d recommend checking the forecast and choosing the clearest day for this tour.
